Trim Work 101: Baseboards, Crown Molding, Casing and Wainscoting

A plain-English guide to the details that make a home feel finished.

Baseboards

Baseboards cover the joint between wall and floor. Taller baseboards make a room feel more substantial, and they are one of the simplest upgrades when you are replacing floors anyway.

Door and window casing

Casing is the trim around doors and windows. Clean, flat profiles suit modern homes, while layered profiles feel more traditional. Whatever you choose, use the same style through the house.

Crown molding

Crown sits where the wall meets the ceiling. It should fit the height of the room: too small disappears, too large feels heavy. It also finishes off cabinets that run close to the ceiling.

Wainscoting

Wainscoting adds paneling to the lower part of a wall. It brings character to dining rooms, entries and hallways, and it protects the wall from everyday bumps.

Why the install matters

Walls are rarely perfectly straight, especially in older Florida homes. Tight miters, careful scribing and clean caulk lines make the difference between trim that looks added on and trim that looks built in.
