Living Through a Remodel: How to Prepare Your Home and Family

Simple ways to make construction easier on your household.

Clear the work area

Empty the rooms being remodeled, and move anything fragile from nearby shelves and walls. Vibration from work in one room can travel further than you would expect.

Plan for dust

A good crew protects floors and seals off the work area, but some dust still travels. Close the doors you can, and cover what you want to keep clean.

Keep pets and kids safe

Work areas have tools, open doors and people coming and going. Choose a quiet room for pets, and agree on where children can play.

Talk about the schedule

Ask for a written schedule before work begins, and find out who your daily contact is. Knowing when the noisy days are makes them much easier to plan around.

Make decisions early

Materials that arrive late are one of the most common reasons a project slows down. The sooner your selections are made, the smoother the job runs.

Expect a surprise or two

Older Florida homes can hide things behind the walls. Keep a little room in your budget, so a surprise stays a small problem.
