LED Shower Niches: The Detail That Makes a Bathroom Glow

Why a lit niche looks so good in the dark, and how to design one.

Shower remodel in St. Petersburg with textured black wave tile, mother-of-pearl hexagon accent stripe and an LED-lit shower niche

Why it works

A recessed shower niche with a soft light inside turns a simple storage spot into the focal point of the room. Turn the main lights down, and the tile around it comes to life. Textured tile looks especially good, because the light catches every ridge.

Pick tile that plays with light

Dark, textured tile and shimmering accents such as mother-of-pearl make the most of a lit niche. In one of our showers, black wave tile and a mother-of-pearl hexagon stripe surround the niche.

Design it before the tile goes up

The niche is framed, waterproofed and tiled as part of the wall, so its size and position have to be settled early. Line it up with your tile layout, so grout lines meet the niche cleanly.

Bring in a licensed electrician

We build and tile the niche, but we do not do electrical work. A licensed electrician should handle the wiring and confirm the light is rated for a wet area.
