Large-Format Tile vs. Mosaic: What Works Best in a Bathroom
How tile size changes the look, the cleaning and the installation.

Large-format tile
Big tiles mean fewer grout lines, which makes a bathroom feel calm and open and leaves less grout to clean. They suit shower walls and bathroom floors, and marble-look porcelain gives you the veining without the upkeep of real stone.
Mosaic tile
Mosaics bring pattern and texture. They bend easily around slopes, which is why they work so well on shower floors, and the extra grout lines give better footing. They also make a beautiful accent wall or stripe.
Use both
Many of the best bathrooms combine the two: large-format tile on the walls, then mosaic on the shower floor or inside a niche. Keep the color family close, so the room feels planned rather than busy.
Installation is different
Large tile needs a very flat wall or floor, or the edges will catch the light and show every high spot. Mosaics need careful spacing, so the sheet lines do not show. Both reward a patient installer.
