Custom vs. Semi-Custom Kitchen Cabinets: How to Choose
What you actually get with each, and when custom cabinetry is worth it.

What semi-custom means
Semi-custom cabinets come in set sizes and styles, with a good range of finishes and some size adjustments. They suit most kitchens with a straightforward layout, and they are often the smart choice when you want a high-end look on a tighter budget.
What custom means
Custom cabinetry is built for your exact room. Every width, height and depth is yours to choose, so cabinets can run right to the ceiling, fit an out-of-square wall, or wrap around a column with no filler strips.
When custom is worth it
Custom usually earns its cost in rooms with odd dimensions, tall ceilings, or storage needs that standard sizes cannot meet, such as a full pantry wall, a built-in bar or a large island with seating.
What matters with either one
Installation makes or breaks both. Level bases, tight reveals, clean scribes against the wall and well-fitted crown molding are what make cabinets look expensive. Look closely at the box construction, the drawer slides and the hinges too, because those are the parts you use every day.
